CHURCH OF GLASS
is a multimedia reflection on transformation:
spiritual, social, physical, and technological.

In the setting of a small Zeelandic village, filmmaker Matthijs Vuijk's grandmother life is turned upside down when the community church she has attended all her life is forced to close. Fortunately, preacher and entrepreneur Ruben van Zwieten, buys the church and aims to transform the faith community to be ready for the 21st Century.

The film explores the confrontation between the small aging faith community of Kortgene and the slick neo-theological entrepreneurship of Ruben van Zwieten transformational vision.

At the same time, Matthijs explores the possibility of preserving what might be lost by the technologically mediated imagination of the church as it once was, through virtual reality and 3d scans.

Through the eyes of the sentient church, as a silent witness to time, the building guides us through its memories: of land reclaimed and reshaped by water; structural changes to its body; the declining role of faith; and a future without clear purpose.

The film is currently in post-production,
The virtual reality is the in pre-development stage.

FILM

The life of filmmaker Matthijs Vuijk's grandmother Coby is turned upside down when the community church she has attended all her life in the small Zeelandic village Kortgene is forced to close. Fortunately, preacher and entrepreneur Ruben van Zwieten, buys the church and aims to transform the faith community to be ready for the 21st Century, by attracting young people, but with all bills paid. Church of Glass explores the confrontation between the small aging faith community of Kortgene and the slick neo-theological entrepreneurship of Ruben van Zwieten transformational vision.

VIRTUAL REALITY

Church of Glass is a 15-minute, poetic VR essay exploring 900 years of transformation: spiritual, social, physical, and geographic – through the eyes of a sentient medieval church. As a silent witness to time, the building guides us through its memories: of land reclaimed and reshaped by water; structural changes to its body; the declining role of faith; and a future without clear purpose.
